Ladakh Winter Travel Guide

Join us to merge in the universe of dry and frozen Ladakh. We have prepared a tour for you to explore its culture through the festival where people are found dressed traditionally and also staying in the family house is the best way to know their lives closely.

We also take you to for an unforgettable experience on the route of frozen river. This trail has been used by the people from Zanskar since centuries to go out of the region when the passes are closed due to the snow. The main reasons were to trade with the outside world, taking their children to school at Leh and to visit the sacred places in the parts of Ladakh during the winter.

Day 1: Arrival at Delhi
Day 2: Explore Delhi
Day 3: Delhi—Leh (3500 m)
Day 4: Visit Shey, Thiksey, Hemis monasteries
Day 5: Leh to Likir- Yang-Thang (3500m) 80km; Trek 1
Day 6: Yang-Thang to Hemischukpachan (3600m), 6hours over Chermentsela (3750m)
Day 7: Hemischukpachan to Themisgam (3200m) over Meptekla (3750m) 5 hours 30 minutes; Trek 3
Day 8: Themisgam to Khaltse (2995m) over Bonbbongla (3850 m), 5 hours; Trek 4
Day 9: Chilling to Gyalpo, 7 hours
Day 10: Gyalpo to Chilling-Leh, 7 hours, 65 km
Day 11 & 12: Flight Leh to Delhi
Day 13: Delhi/Agra, 220 km; 4 hours
Day 14: Agra to Delhi via Fathepur Sikri (265 km) and departure.
Day 15-16: (with festival)

Day 1: Arrival at Delhi

Reception in airport; transfer to the hotel and overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Explore Delhi

After breakfast combined sightseeing of Old & New Delhi, visiting, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Shanti Van, Raj Ghat, Huymaun Tomb, Qutab Minar and pass through India Gate and the architectural buildings of President House and the Parliament. Overnight at the hotel

Day 3: Delhi—Leh (3500 m)

Transfer to domestic airport, flight to Leh. Transfer to the hotel, afternoon visit monastery in the town, Shanti Stupa and an old fort of Leh.

Day 4: Visit Shey, Thiksey, Hemis monasteries

Full day sight-seeing to famous monasteries in Ladakh; back to the hotel and overnight at the hotel.

Festival of Spituk, (Jan)
2 days for the festival, overnight at the hotel.

Dosmoche in Leh—Likir, Feb
2 days for the festival, overnight at the hotel-(Likkir local house—Guest house)

Day 5: Leh to Likir- Yang-Thang (3500m) 80km; Trek 1

Trek to Yang Thang, 5 hours (3600 m), over Pobe (3580 m) la Chagtsela (3630m)

Day 6: Yang-Thang to Hemischukpachan (3600m), 6hours over Chermentsela (3750m)

Leave to the big village of Schukpa (Cedar). Two hours climb to reach the pass, long descend to the village. Visit the Gompa at the top of the village and explore the village, overnight at a local house.

Day 7: Hemischukpachan to Themisgam (3200m) over Meptekla (3750m) 5 hours 30 minutes; Trek 3

Trail passes through flat pasture toward the Meptekla which takes approx 2hrs and 30mins till the pass. Descend to Ang village from here. One can lead towards the Shyok valley. Next 30 minutes to Temisgam the richest valley of Ladakh in: apricot, Apple and nuts. A beautiful village of tea with its Gompa can also be visited; overnight in local house.

Day 8: Themisgam to Khaltse (2995m) over Bonbbongla (3850 m), 5 hours; Trek 4

Leave beautiful valley and an easy climb to Bonbonbla for one vhour 30 minutes. Follow a long gentle slope to Khaltse the main high way between Leh and Srinagar, further drive to Chilling; overnight in the camp.

Day 9: Chilling to Gyalpo, 7 hours

At Chilling where the adventure starts, the porters prepare the baggage. While walking on the ice, follow the guide and the porters, as it is first day so you will be taking some time to get used to walk on ice. To keep the warmth in body, one have to stay loose that’s how the circulation keep going.

Day 10: Gyalpo to Chilling-Leh, 7 hours, 65 km

Same way back to the road head, further drive to Leh; overnight at the hotel

Stok Guru Tse-chu (Feb)
2 days for the festival, overnight at the hotel.

Day 11 & 12: Flight Leh to Delhi

Transfer to domestic airport. Flight to Delhi, transfer to the hotel. Afternoon free day in Delhi or at Leh, in case of any weather problem (Security day); Free visit possible to the Red fort, Mosque, Birla Temple, Old Delhi, Connaught Place, etc.; overnight at the hotel.

Day 13: Delhi/Agra, 220 km; 4 hours

Morning leave to Agra, visit the Taj Mahal, sumptuous white marble tomb, one of the most beautiful piece of Mugal art. It was built by Shah Jahan Emperor in 17th century for his wife Mumtaj Mahal; afternoon visit Itmad-ud-Daula’s Tomb; evening at leisure; overnight in Agra.

Day 14: Agra to Delhi via Fathepur Sikri (265 km) and departure.

The legend related that Akbar was without a male heir and made a pilgrimage to this spot to see the saint Shaik Salim Chisti. He fore hold the birth of Akbars son; furthermore Akbar transferred his capital to Sikiri and built a new and splendid city there, hence his ruled between 1570 and 1586 AD at Fathepur Sikiri. By evening, drive directly to the airport to board the onward flight; end of service

Notes:

Wet paper will get frozen and in the tents it condenses because of the iso-thermic reaction. The days are very short in winters, night falls 17.30hour,

One has to keep a bottle for urinating at night.

To get accessory:

The Yaktrax of Raidlight (www.raidlight.com) for accessory of shoes which allow a good grip on the ice without creaking the ice.

Accomodation:

Hotel on twin sharing at Leh, heated by Tandoor or electric heater; overnight in camp, two men spacious tent; at a local house common room, please do not compare the catagory of Indian hotels with that of the west.
