Druk Path Trek

 

Bhutan – Bhutan is located in the eastern Himalayas, bordered with China at its north and with India  on its  south, east and west. Its capital is Thimpu. Area is about 46,500 sq km (17,954 sq miles). Official language is Dzongkha. Currency is known as the 'Ngultrum', shortly written 'Nu.'. It is equable to the Indian Rupee. Population is around seven hundred thosand. Main religion is Mahayana Buddhism. Southern part of Bhutan are mainly Hindu but majority of the people follow the Drukpa school of Kagyupa sect.


It is  the land  of Dzongs (Fortress ) and monasteries , monk ,majestic mountain and the rich heritage .An architectural land full of warm hearted and friendly people who go to the unusual length to preserve each element of Bhutanese life ,where past is still the present.

The climate of Bhutan is variable in each region. It’s tropical in the south, in the central valleys winter is cool and summers is hot. On the other hand, in the Himalayas severe winters and cool summers are prevalent. Bhutan is a botanists’ paradise. Rare and exotic faunas found here.The way back from Bhutan, you will explore Delhi the capital of India.

High light of the Druk Path trek :  Classic walk along high and windy ridges, ruined forts, yak herds on high pasture , Isolated  villages , fabulous lake swarming with fish, magnificent rhododendron forests, panoramic views of the Himalaya ,Magnificant  Dzongs and monasteries ,Art and  craft center , Gantsey   known for black necked crane Thimpu  the Capital town , Taksang monastery in Paro valley also know as Tiger nest ..

 

ITINERARY :

 

Day 1: Arrival  Delhi ,

Transfert to hotel, night in Hotel.

 

Day 2: Paro

Early morning after breakfast transfer to the airport for your flight to Paro. During the journey, you will experience from the left side of the plane a spectacular view of Mt. Everest, and other famous Himalayan Mountains including the sacred Mt. Jhomolhari and Mt. Jichu Drake in Bhutan. Assistance upon arrival at Paro Airport and transfer to the hotel.

After check in hotel leave for sight seen  :

visit Drugyal Dzong (a ruined fortress), 16 kilometers away from Paro town. Although it has been in ruin but this Dzong has its great historical importance for the people of Bhutan. It was a place where the Bhutanese finally defeated the Tibetan invasion and drove them back. On a clear day one can view the sacred Mt. Jhomolhari (7,329m). .

 

After Lunch visit National Museum which used to be a watch tower for Paro Rimpong Dzong (Fortress). It was converted into Museum in 1968. Visit Paro Rimpong Dzong, the Dzong was built in 1646 AD, and walk down to town on the way you can see the traditional wood bridge of ancient style and sightseeing trip to the Paro town. Overnight at the hotel.

 

Day 3 : Paro (An excursion to Taktashang)

After breakfast drive up to Satsam Chorten (10 km from Paro town) and from there walk up to Taktsang Monastery. The name Taktsang means “Tiger’s Nest ". The Monastery clings to a vertical granite cliff drop of nearly 4000 ft. and overlooks the Paro valley and the river. It is said that in the second half of the 8th century, Guru Padma  Sambhava known as the second Buddha in Bhutan meditated on this spot where the Monastery is situated having alighted there on the back of a flying tigress.
Rest time at leisure .Overnight at the hotel.

 

Day 4: Paro – Jeyla Dzong (3350m - 10 Km -3-4 h)                                     trek 1

The trek is short and begins above the National Museum, we climb till we reach camp. If the weather is clear the Paro valley and the snow-capped mountains can be seen. The campsite is near the old Jeyla Dzong. If time permit visit the Jeyla Dzong. Overnight at camp .

 

Day 5: Jeyla Dzong – Jangchulakha  (3700m - 12Km -4-5 h)                     trek 2

The trek starts with a short climb and then passes through a thick alpine forest of rhododendron and gradually climbs. The Yaks on winter graze in the pastures around the path you may see yak herders around your campsite. Overnight at camping.

 

Day 6: Jangchulakha – Jimilangtso  Trek (3706m  11km)                       trek 3

We follows the ridge of the mountains, if the day is clear you can have a beautiful view of the mountains. Our camp is close to Lake Jimilangtso. These lakes are known for their giant sized trout. Overnight at the camp.

 

Day 7: Jimilangtso – Semkotha (3834m - 11km)                                            trek 4

Today trail is through dwarf rhododendron trees and passes by the lake of Janetsho. Also come across some yak herders’ camps and also see how they live. Overnight at the camping.

 

Day 8: Semkotha – Phajoding (3536m - 10km)                                              trek 5

The trek begins with a gradual climb and if the weather permits one will get a beautiful view of Mt. Gangkhar Punsum, the highest mountain in Bhutan and other Himalayan mountains from Doupchula Pass. The path gradually descends till Phajoding, where the monastery and the retreat centers for meditation are located. Overnight at the camp.

 

Day 9: Phajoding – Thimphu (2454m - 8km -3-4 hrs)                             trek 6

The trail to Thimphu goes down hill through the blue pine forests. Upon arrival at Thimphu check in at the hotel. Rest of the time at leisure. Overnight at the hotel.

  

Day 10:  Thimphu – Gantey (140 km- 5 h)

The drive is via the Dochu La Pass (3050m). If the weather permits you can see a range of high peaks toward the north east. The recently built 108 chortens gives the ridge a very beautiful and charming presence.

Enroute we will visit the ancient Wangdi Dzong.

 

Gangtey is a beautiful place of rolling hills and green meadows surrounded by snowcapped mountains. It is at an altitude of 3000m. From Gangtey, one can closely view the picturesque Black Mountain ranges as well as the beautiful Phobjikha valley. Gangtey Gonpa is perched a top a small hill that rises from the valley floor. The Monastery is surrounded by a large village inhabited mainly by the families of the 140 Gomchens (Lay Monks). The Gangtey Gonpa is the only Nyingmapa Monastery on the western side of the Black mountains and is also the biggest of its kind. Gangtey is also the winter home for the famous Black Necked Cranes who migrate here from Tibet during the winter months. At Gangtey, you can visit the Gangtey Monastery and the Black Necked Crane center. Explore the Gantey village. Upon arrival check in at the hotel.

Day 11: Gantey to Punakha Via Wangdi  (64 km - 2h30)

Same  way back till Wangdy, Visit Wangdiphodrang  Dzong, Wangdiphodrang Dzong and its small town are perched on a hill between two rivers. This is another District Administration Office housed in a fortress. The Dzong was built in 1638 AD. Further  13 kms drive to punakha ,Check in hotel  and  visit the Punakha Dzong, the most beautiful Dzong in Bhutan..

 

Punakha Dzong is built in 1637 by Shabdrung, the spiritual and temporal ruler of Bhutan prior to the present dynasty. It is an old capital which still serves as the winter residence of the monk body. The first King, Ugyen  Wangchuck, was crowned here in 1907. It has withstood several damages from fire, earthquake and flood. The latest flood of Oct' 94 caused great damage to the fortress but miraculously spread the statue of the Buddha Jojampa.

 

Day 12: Punakha to Thimpu  (77 km - 3 h)

After breakfast leave to the capital of Bhutan, visit the Memorial Chorten (a great stupa) built in memory of the Third King of Bhutan who reigned the Kingdom from 1952-1972, this stupa was built in 1974. Visit the mini Zoo where the national animals were kept and drive to Sangeygang where you can have a spectacular view of Thimphu valley. Visit nunnery in Zulikha the Dupthop Lhakhang one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan. Visit the Wood Craft and Painting school where traditional arts and crafts are still kept alive through the instructions of painting and curving.

 

Day 13: Thimpu  to Paro : (48 km -1h30)

Visit the Handicrafts Emporium where Bhutanese textiles and other arts and crafts are displayed and can be purchased. Visit the National Library where ancient Buddhist manuscripts are preserved. Check out at 12 noon. After lunch leave to Paro

for O/N stay .

 

Day 14: Paro – Delhi  flight

Transfer  to airport for flight to Delhi, On arrival in Delhi transfer to hotel, half  day sightseeing tour of Old Delhi to include India’s largest Mosque the Jama Masjid and Red Fort, afternoon free, night in hotel .

 

Day 15 : Delhi and Departure

Full  day sight seen in Delhi to Kutumb Minar, Humaium Tomb, Bhai Temple, after Lunch , stroll in Connaught place,  Lakshmi narayan temple, Evening transfer to airport for onward flight.
