IN THE FOOT PRINT OF NOMADES OF CHANG-THANG

This trek lets you explore the region of Chang-Thang, which literally means “the high altitude plateau.” This is the home of the nomades (Changpas) which lies beyond the high passes. Tukche is the nomade headquarter, with its huge saltwater lake of Tsokar. Further east lies the famous Tsomoriri, a even larger saltwater lake at Karzok the capital of Rupshu. Here you will find the Kyang or Tibetan wild ass and the elusive snow leopard. Rare and exotic birds, such as the Bar-headed Goose, Black-necked crane and Brahmi ducks visit the area in season.

Your Road Map : 


Your journey, day by day : 
 
Day 1: Arrival in Delhi
Reception at airport and transfer to hotel in Delhi. Overnight in hotel.

Day 2: Delhi to Leh (3500m).
Transfer to domestic airport. Flight to Leh and transfer to hotel. In the afternoon, visit Leh’s monastery, Shanti Stupa and old fort.

Day 3: Leh to Rumtse (4040m/75 kms)
Leave early and visit Shey, Thiksey and Hemis monasteries on the way. Overnight camp at Rumtse.

Day 4: Rumtse to Kyamar (4050m/5 hrs) – Trek 1
This is the first trek. An easy trail leads to a beautiful campsite close to a spring. We spend the night here.

Day 5: Kyamar to Tisaling (4200m) over Kumar la and Mandachand la (5 - 7 hrs) –Trek 2
It is a long day ahead, so an early start is advised. The trail goes along the river, gradually ascending to Kumur la (4900m). Enjoy a spectacular view of the Chang- Thang Range before descending steadily to the river bank. We wade through the river and go up again to the next pass Mandachand la. An easy descent brings us to our campsite on the pasture land of Tisaling.

Day 6: Tisaling to Tukje (4267m) via Shibuk over Shibukla (4980m/6-7 hrs) – Trek 3
We begin with a two-hour trek to the pass, and enjoy the spectacular view from there. Descend to Shibuk, where marmots play hide and seek. Now follows an easy flat track along the large valley to the nomade headquarter at Tukche, where we establish a camp for the night. We later visit the village and its small gompa perched above it. A stroll along the lake shore provides for bird watching and splendid views of the sunset.

Day 7: Tsokar to Nuruchan (4300m/4 hrs) – Trek 4
The trail runs alongside the lake and crosses the plateau. Numerous kyang (wild donkeys) can be seen here. We camp close to a nomade village.

Day 8: Nuruchan to Rachungkaru (4400m) over Horlamkongka la (4900m/6 hrs) – Trek 5
A gradual ascent to the pass (1.30 hrs), is followed by an easy descent, and a long walk to a beautiful campsite near the stream.

Day 9: Rachungkaru to Gyama burma (4250m) over Kyamayuri la (5200m/5 hrs) – Trek 6
Another climb to another pass (2 hrs), a gradual descent, and an easy trail to our campsite for the night.

Day 10: Gyma Burma to Karzok / Tsomoriri (4573m/7 hrs) over Yalungnyaula (5440m) – Trek 7
A long day, with excellent views of the lake from the pass. We reach the lake at Karzok, 240 kms southeast of Leh. The Karzok Gompa and the nomades (Changpas) are outstanding features of this lake, which has a circumference of about 36 kms. We explore the village and monastery, and stroll along the lake shore. Night in camp.

Day 11: Karzok to Kyangdom (4350m/7 hrs) – Trek 8
The trail lies along the lake, providing for a long and pleasant walk. We camp beside the Phertsephu River which merges into lake.

Day 12: Kyangdom to Kunmotchey (4580m/5 hrs) – Trek 9
The trail goes up the river in an easterly direction, with two easy river crossing. Initially, the valley of Phertse Phoo is narrow, with colorful and rugged rocks. It slowly opens up into wide green meadows. We establish camp, and enjoy the bountiful nature.

Day 13: Kunmotchey to Lato (4650m/5 hrs) – Trek 10
Today is an easy walk through a meadow, where we may meet the nomadic people. The valley gets wider than the day before. A beautiful campsite at Lato, on the meadow.

Day 14: Lato to Zozang (4700m/4.30 hrs) – Trek 11
Zozang is at the base of the Telacon la. A splendid campsite, with views of high mountains, and far from nomade camps.

Day 15: Zozang to Pang (4600m)over Telakon la (4850m) – Trek 12
A gradual ascent to the pass leads to extensive views of the barren but beautiful landscape and the plateau of Pang, Quang chu thang (ground of the wild donkey). A pleasant descent to the bank of the Zara chhu River, which we cross several times. After walking six hours, we reach the last campsite.

Day 16: Pang to Leh (3500m)
After breakfast, we drive to Leh over the second highest motorable pass in the world, the Tang Langla (5333m). It takes six hours to cover the distance (about 150 kms). On arrival in Leh, we check into a hotel. Overnight in Leh.

Day 17: Leh
A free, leisurely day in Leh. Night in hotel.

Day 18: Leh to Delhi
Transfer to Leh airport. Flight to Delhi. Transfer from airport to hotel. The afternoon is free. Overnight in hotel.

Day 19: Departure;
Visit Old or New Delhi for a full day of sightseeing. In the evening transfer to International Airport for onward flight to destination


Document required to obtain the inner line permit:
