MT. STOK KANGRI EXPEDITION
MT. STOK KANGRI EXPEDITION
Trek Lamayuru to Stok (***)

Stok Kangri is one of classic expeditions of the Ladakh, the combination of a trek top of height and a rise possible for the summit.

Stok Kangri (6153 m) means literally " the high mountain " in Ladakhi. Visible since the main city of Ladakh, Leh, it is place in the National park of Hemis. Although the summit seems impressive, he is not very difficult technically but asks nevertheless for a good physical condition, for a minimum of knowledge of the mountain and for a minimum of equipment (fixed ropes, etc.).

Stok Kangri is the objective completed to make a success of the first one " 6 000 " in Himalaya. From your arrival to Leh, the capital of Ladakh, its hurt pyramid will catch your eyes. His(her, its) south fish bone(edge) presents a magnificent route(course), with panoramic views on all the chain of Karakoram and even, in clear weather, until K2.

10 hours for the round trip are needed. According to the climatic conditions and of snow coverage, our guide will fix a rope to cross the bar of snow; if there is few snow it will be by the rock hooks. If you are an experimented mountain dweller, it will not be necessary to fix of rope.

To reach the base camp, we propose you an original and little frequented route. It requires to cross several passes which make us acquire a good acclimatization.

From Chilling, we follow the river Zanskar and we cross it by a nacelle suspended from a cable. Interesting experience, and without risk. Not to miss! Then we take an easy path until Skiu by following the river Markha.

DAY 07: Markha - Tchatchutse (3750 m) 6h, trek 3
The trek goes back up the valley main right bank, the path is sometimes difficult in the bed of the river. Before arriving at the village of Hankar, we visit the monastery of Humlung, along the river. Little beyond Hankar, we abandon a wide valley on our right. We take a narrow valley going up higher and which obliges us to cross a bridge up to the left bank to reach the pasture of Tchatchutse.

DAY 08: Tchatchutse - Nimaling (4700 m) 5h, trek 4
The path rises very gradually, the river is rather far to the left. We continue near a small lake, then cross the pastures of Nimaling. It is one of the most beautiful high valleys in Ladakh, dominated by Kang Yatse (6400 m). Several rather difficult roads lead to the summit.

A rise zigzag about 2 hours up to the pass Konmaru-la offers us a panoramic view on the valley, as well as on the distant chain of Zanskar. Then we continue by a stiff descent zigzag on the other side of Konmaru-la. The trek crosses the magnificent bed of the river and continues by a difficult descent for horses. DAY 11: Shang Pu - Shang La (4875 m) - Matho Phu (4420 m) – Gangpoche, trek 7
This part of the route is very isolated. We are in the foothills of the chain of Stok. We cross several edges and minor passes. Occasional views on the valley of the Indus which flows far off. Pass of Shang La and descent on the banks of the river Tokpo. In the afternoon, descent in the direction of Matho Phu where we settle our camp. At night under tent. (6 at 7 am of walking).

DAY 12 : Gangpoche - Matho La (4965 m) - Base camp of Stok (4990 m), trek 8
Hard rise in the morning to cross the last pass, the Matho La. Of the pass, the magnificent view on Stok Kangri and whole route of ascent. We are in the valley which links the village of Stok with the base camp of the same name. We find here villagers come make their herds of yaks graze. At night under tent. (6 at 7 am of walking).

DAY 14: Climbing Stok Kangri (6130 m): Trek 9
One can climb directly from Lower Base Camp or shift camp to the Higher Base Camp. Get up at 2 A.M. And you should have prepared your daypack and necessary equipment the previous night, before going to sleep. Have a light snack in the morning before starting off for the Big Climb! First, there is a diagonal ascent up the moraine of the glacier, and then a short scramble over the glacier itself. After that, climb up the steep, zigzagging trail to the summit. The view from the pinnacle at sunrise is mind-blowing.

According to the condition of the route, our guide will fix the climbing rope either in rock or in snow, with rock pitons or snow stakes as required, and other equipment necessary to secure the rope.
