| MENTOK
KANGRI EXPEDITION (6172 mtrs) |
Trek Chang
to Spiti (****)
East
of Ladakh, on the
indo-Tibetan border, extends between India and the
Tibet the vast plateau of
Chang-Thang, area of the nomads Changpas.
Having crossed several passes, you
will discover waters of the salt lake
Tsokar, and farther in the East in
Rupshu, immense lake Tsomoriri:
near, Karzok, main village of Rupshu, in 4572m
above the sea level. The
temperatures are there extreme: very low at night and
very high under a
burning sun in the daytime. The air is there so dry as
eternal snows are
in more of 6000m!
The fauna adapted itself
too to the harshness
of the climate: we meet Kyang, wild donkeys, come graze
near the lake
Tsokar, much more rarely the leopards of snows, but also the
multitude
of exotic birds. Our route borrows(takes) the ancient road of
business
and the exchanges which linked Spiti in the Tibet, when the "
roof of
the world " was free.
Mentok Kangri (6175
m)
Mentok is the
Tibetan name of a wild flower growing in this
region to the summer
season. The approach towards the base camp since Karzok
is relatively
easy. According to the ascent we have breathlessly more by the
view that
by the lack of oxygen. A minimum of technique and experience climber
is
nevertheless required for this ascent.

Korzok valley is green with wild flowers giving the peak its name Mentok
inTibetan and Ladakhi means 'flower '. In some old maps this peak
has
been named Mata.
Our summit Day begins before dawn, to give us
ample time for the climb. It is most likely that we do not need
our
crampons for the most part as we scramble over
scree and boulders, which
lead up to the top. Most of the
ridge is like a steep path, so ropes
are not usually
necessary, although some scrambling is required. At an
