HEMIS : Situated to 48 km of Leh on the other bank of the river Singee Tsangpo (Indus), the monastery of Hemis is leaned in the side of a hill at the bottom of a deep throat in the center of an oasis where grow willows and poplars. Based by Stagtsang Raspa, under the aegis of Sengge Namgyal, in the 1630s, Hemis is the biggest Drukhpa du Ladakh monastery. It was the privileged sanctuary of the dynasty Namgyal. Two temples look onto the main place : the dukhang to the right shelters the throne of Rimpoche and the statue of Pehar, protective divinity of Hémis. Murals represent diverse divinities in a sinisant style dating the middle of the 18th century. The chokang to the left shelters a big golden statue of Shakyamuni and several chortens of the chiselled silver 18th beginning decorated with stones semi precious. On the side walls and the wall of entrance alternate representations of the Thousand Buddha and the terrifying divinities. The lhakhang nima, on a secondary court, conceals beautiful frescoes of 17th telling in particular the main events of Buddha's life. The monastery shelters finally a gigantic tangka embroidered and decorated with pearls exposed towards the believers (and tourists !) once every 12 years.
