LAMAYURU TO HEMIS THROUGH THE MARKHA VALLEY

This trek allows you to discover the legendary landscape and colorful culture of Ladakh’s mountain dwellers. The trail begins from majestic Lamayuru and ascends to the high passes before reaching the valley of Markha. On the way, we will visit Chilling, the village of silversmiths, and cross the Zanskar River by a cable. The trail goes through isolated villages and oasis, dominated by the snowcapped peaks of Stok Kangri and Kang Yatse (6400m). A 5150m pass gives access to the monastery of Hémis in the Indus Valley. We then drive on to Leh and visit some prominent monasteries in the region.

Your journey day by day :
Day 1: Arrival in Delhi
Reception at airport and transfer to hotel. Overnight in hotel.

Day 2: Delhi to Leh (3500m)
Transfer to domestic airport. Flight to Leh. Transfer to Leh hotel. In the afternoon visit Leh’s monastery, Shanti Stupa and old fort.

Day 3: Drive to Lamayuru (3600m) via Phyang and Alchi (about 17O kms)

Day 4: Lamayuru to Wanla over Prinkitila (3725 m/5 hrs) – Trek 1
Attend morning ceremony in the monastery before beginning the gradual ascent over Printikla (4950 m) through a narrow gorge. We arrive at Shilla and go on to cross the bridge to Wanla.

Day 5: Wanla to Hinju (4 hrs) – Trek 2
The trek follows the Yapola River on the left, and two hours later reaches Penjila. We continue up the valley, leading off at right angles. An hour later we leave the valley, and another hour’s trekking brings us to Hinju.

Day 6: Hinju to Sumda over Konzke la (4950m/7 hrs) – Trek 3
The trail goes through Hinju Village before a steep climb to the pass. After descending, we reached a pasture and a blocked cave before reaching Sumda. There are nice campsite at the edge of the river, but we continue along the left bank to Sumda.

Day 7: Sumda to Base of Dundunchenla (4200m/3 hrs) – Trek 4
Today’s short trek reduces the long, exhausting trek between Sumda and Chilling. A short but steep trail continues for 1.30 hours, and then becomes an easier gradient till the campsite at the base of the pass.

Day 8: Base to Chilling, over Dundunchenla (4700m/6 hrs) – Trek 5
A two-hour trek brings us to the pass, from where we descend on the south side. The slope is steep and continues to a narrow valley, which opens out at Chilling, a village of metal craftsmen. People here work with copper, tin and silver to make ladles, Tchang pots, tea pots and other utensils.

Day 9: Chilling to Sakaya, Skiu (3850m/4 30 hrs) – Trek 6
From Chilling we follow the Zanskar River upstream for a few hundred meters. Then we cross the river by cable, and follow a good path till Skaya.

Day 10: Skiu to Markha (7 hrs) – Trek 7
The trek is along a nice path on the right bank of the Markha River, with a great deal of vegetation. We cross the river to a barren plane, and later cross back to the right bank and arrive in a small village called Chaluk . Another river crossing leads to a short climb to the beautiful village of Markha. We camp near the river.

Day 11: Markha to Tchatchutse (6 hrs) – Trek 8
The trail goes up the main valley on the right bank. We visit the monastery of Humlung, then follow the right bank to arrive at Hankar Village. We now move into a narrow valley and go higher, crossing a bridge to the left bank and reach the pastureland of Tchatchutse.

Day 12: Tchatchutse to Nimaling (3 hrs/4700m) – Trek 9
The trail is gradual with several short inclines, with the river far to the left of the gorge. We pass a small lake, then cross a pastureland to Nimaling. This is one of the most beautiful high valleys in Ladakh, dominated by the KongYatse (6400m).

Day 13: Nimaling to Shang (3640m) over Kongmaru la (5150m/8 hrs) – Trek 10
A zigzag ascent of about two hours leads us to the panoramic Kongmaru-la. Then follows a steep descent till Chuskirmo and a gorgeous riverbed. A colourful rocky path leads to Shang, a beautiful campsite. We visit a small gompa outside the village.

Day 14: Shang to Leh (60 kms)
A vehicle will pick us up for a visit to the monasteries of Hemis and Thiksey, and to Shey Palace. We then go on to Leh. Overnight in hotel.

Day 15: Leh to Delhi
Transfer to Leh airport. Flight to Delhi. Transfer to a hotel in Delhi. Afternoon is free. Overnight in hotel.

Day 16:Departure from Delhi
Visit Old or New Delhi for a full day sightseeing. Evening transfer to the International Airport for onward flight to destination.
