Bara Bhangal Trek

Shepherd trail or transhumance

The flocks from the high altitude pasture land of Lahoul and Spiti come back to their home land over high passes. The trek starts from Manali through the forest of Cedar and Pine. Alpine meadows are covered by wild flowers (blue turquoise) in summers. The streams over high passes, snow covered mountains, varieties of flora and occasionally visible fauna as well are in abundance. Variety of birds can be seen; Himalayan beer, Musk deer and the mountain goat have been spotted by the trekkers.

One day of leisure at Barabhangal to explore the life of this isolated village habitats. After crossing Thamsar pass descend to the valley of Kangra, trek ends up in Bir and further drive to Dharamsala the capital of Tibetan government in exile where Dalailama resides. At the end you will visit the Golden temple at Amritsar (Punjab), the capital of Sikh religion which it attracts the pilgrimage from all over the world. The best time for this trek is mid-September to mid-October during world famous festival of Dushehra . This festival is celebrated throughout the India but it is celebrated as an international festival here at Kullu


Day 1: Arrival Manali (2000 m)

Day 2: Manali to Lamadugh (2500 m) 5hrs

Day 3: Lamadugh to Dohra Nalla (3100 m) over Khanpari pass (3600 m) 6hrs

Day 4: Dohra Nalla to Sangohar, the base of Kali Hani (3800 m) 5h30.

Day 5: Sangohar to Gaddi Gote (3600 m) over Kalihali pass (4800 m) 8hrs

Day 6: Gaddi Gote to Lamba Phad (3300 m) 4 hrs;

Day 7: Lamba Phad to Soony (3500 m) 5 hrs;

Day 8: Soony to Bara Bhangal (2540 m) 6 hrs;

Day 9: Bara Bhangal base of Thamsar pass (3500 m) 5h30

Day 10: Base to Panihartu (3200 m.) over Thamsar pass 6/7 hrs.

Day 11: Panihartu to Raj Gundha (2900 m) 6rs.

Day 12: Raj Gundha to Bir (2080 m) 5 hrs. Drive to Dharamsala.

Day 13: Dharamshala- Airport/ Busstand drop


Day 1: Arrival in Manali (1960m) 

Arrival in Manali, report at respected hotel. Relax for while till all participant reach. Later walk to exploring the Hadimba temple Buddhist monastery and town to by the needful accessory. Afternoon briefing about the trek. meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) at your own charge. Night in hotel.

Day 2: Manali to Lamadugh (2500 m) 5hrs.

The first day of the trek leads through the cool forests of giant Deodars (Pine cedar), Walnut and Maples. Follow gradually the Manalsu valley by the company of river flowing below. The walk is through pine, texus, mapple & oak forest, and is full of vegetation including wild cherries and various flora to witness. Later take a short steady walk deep into the jungle till the lush meadow appears. Another an hour of efforts will bring you to campsite located at the beneath of Khandpari Tibba which opens up the vast horizon. Enjoy the panorama around, night in camp.

Day 3: Lamadugh to Dohra Nalla (3100 m) over Khanpari pass (3600 m) 6rs.

The trail now begins by ascending steeply through the woods and meadows. With wild alpine flowers strewn all around, the brilliant shrubs of Rhododendron and Birch pave the way to the pass, you will admire the extensive view of far distant Himalayan peaks (Deo Tibba- Indraasan on east and Hanuman Tibba and many more at north. Take easy descend to the Dohra nalla. Night in camp

Day 4: Dohra Nalla to Sangohar, the base of Kali Hani (3800 m) 5h30.

A lovely walk high over the valley through pasture land, the lush forest, bushes and the debris of avalanches can be crossed as snow bridges over stream. At the end take a short ascend following the sharp ridge to the base of Kalihani pass. A beautiful meadow is filled by varieties of wild flowers species (in summer) will makes the afternoon unforgettable. Night in camp.

Day 5: Sangohar to Gaddi Gote (3600 m) over Kalihali pass (4800 m) 8hrs.

It’s going to be hard and long day. The landscape change from the forests and meadows to the rocky outcrops with patches of snow and glacier. Your day begins with steep climb through pasture, narrow rocky path before stepping to the glacial debris and snow field to the top of the pass. Once at the top unfold 360degree stunning view of surrounding Himalaya. Short stopover at the pass and follow long descend over glacier, moraine amidst boulder along sparkling stream till campsite. Night in camp.

Day 6: Gaddi Gote to Lamba Phad (3300 m) 4hrs.

Now the trail leads downward the valley following the Soony river via Devi Gote (pasture). A small temple built by the shepherds (Gaddies) as protecting deity of their herds and themselves from the natural catastrophes and the wild animal. Pay homage to the Goddess and continue walking through pasture sloping from river bank to the top of the valley. Night in camp.

Day 7: Lamba Phad to Soony (3500 m) 5hrs.

Leaving this beautiful campsite behind, the path winds through rocky terrain and soon is replaced by meadows again. The trail ascends slightly toward the tree line. The river gurgle through spectacular gorges and is crossed by a snow bridge or temporary wooden bridge, campsite is located after a short while. Night in camp.

Day 8: Soony to Bara Bhangal (2540 m) 6hrs.

The trail now winds its way down towards the valley floor, after which almost level walk leads to the camp just before the tiny ancient village of Bara Bhangal.

A remote and isolated village is inhabited by the legendary Himalayan shepherds (the Gaddies) who lead thier nomadic life. They lead their vast flocks of sheep and goats to high mountain’s summer pastures and in autumn return back to their isolated existence of Bara Bhangal. They spend short span of time with their family and prepare further exodus to the winter graze in plain of Kangara valley. Stroll in village, night in camp.

Day 9: Bara Bhangal base of Thamsar pass (3500 m) 5h30.

A gradual and steady climb following the mountain stream. As we gain the height the landscape start changing dramatically, the air became cooler as approaching toward the camp located at the foot of the pass. Since you are camping below the snow range you can feel the chilled air blowing down to the valley. Night in camp.

Day 10: Base to Panihartu (3200 m.) over Thamsar pass 6 / 7hrs

Steep and gradual ascend amid the rocky and glacial terrain takes around 2h30hrs till the pass which offers a spectacular panorama of Dhauladhar range expanded toward kangara valley with mighty Manimahesh Tibba on the north. Another spectacular attraction of the day are dark blue lakes shimmers as the jewels of the Thamsar pass at its either side. After a short patch of glacier, you will take a long steep descend by zing-zag trail to the campsite of the Panihartu. Night in camp.

Day 11: Panihartu to Raj Gundha (2900 m) 6hrs.

A very pleasant walk goes through paved path amidst Rhododendrons, meadows, forest and the cascading waterfall. Slowly the valley begins to get wider and tiny secluded village of Rajgundha appears is adorns with farm land and houses made of mud and stone. Its a first village after the pass lies on the Chhota Bhangal region of Kangara valley. Night in camp

Day 12: Raj Gundha - Bir (2080 m) - 6 hrs.- drive Dharamsala 67 kms 2hrs.

Easy trail over the valley floor goes through the forest of oaks and rhododendron. From Billing direct descend to the Bir. As the Billing is well known for the paragliding, the participants from all over the India as well as foreigners use to take part in the competition. Belling provides extensive view of the lush green Kangra valley and soon the steep descends ends at the tiny Tibetan settlement of Bir. A delightful last day of this most wondrous trek through the land of the legendary Gaddis, tough and wiry Himalayan shepherds. Vehicle will pick you for further journey to Dharamsala. Day 13: Dharamshala- Airport/ Busstand drop

Its free day and our car will drop you either at airport or at bus stand as per your departure schedule,

Less than 30 days before departure The agency will be obliged to withhold the full amount of the deposit paid by the customer. In this case, the customer must inform their insurance as soon as possible and provide as much documentation to support the cancellation of trip. It is therefore h3ly advised to take out cancellation insurance to cover such expenses.
    Itinerary / hotels are sub to change in case of strike , civil war threaten , you may be will lose expected places you have prepared for but will explore unexpected and for sure will not disappointed. In case of Vehicle break down another mode of transport will be managed at the earliest possible, In that case you are requested to keep patience. And co-operate with the situation ,while travelling to rural and isolated Area replacing vehicle can take time due to lac of communication or distance to pass the message with the other vehicle those who are driving toward the nearest town or the place from where one can have telephone facilities. Or from where one can be connected by Mobile phone . Also you can be transferred by the other type of vehicle what ever is available at the moment as of local bus till you will be not having the proper mode of transport .
    The Company cannot be made liable for the consequences of weather condition, flight cancellations or delay of bus / train at destination , war or threat of civil war, strikes, industrial action, political unrest or any other force majeure, unusual or unforeseen circumstance. The company reserves the right to use alternate transport, or vary the itinerary if breakdown, sickness or any other force major. Any additional that result, such as extra hotel accommodation, flight or road transport will be on your charge and must be paid directly at the spot. Please understand, there are certain hazards involved in your adventurous and culture holidays which you must accept at your own risk. The company will not be liable for any illness major or minor injury, death sustained during neither the trip, nor it will be liable for any uninsured losses of your property and other losses during the trip.     Accommodation is sub. to your budget ( standard, 3 star or 4 star category and heritage hotels ) and choice as shown in cost table, during the trek ( deluxe Tent ) at fix camp at sam dune and Khuri with attached toilet and bath. Indian meals is served, bit on spicy side, Breakfast and dinner will be served at the hotel, Lunch packed or in local restaurant or in hotel sub to the schedule.
    Sub. to the number of person in group, for 4 persons Toyota Innova / Scorpia or Zylo, for 5 to 12 Tempo travelers or mini bus will be provided. For more than 12 participants either two Tempo traveler’s or mini coach subject to availability. All vehicle will be air-conditioned, except in hilly area air-condition of any vehicle can not be regularly used due to steep uphill drive so you have to co-operate with. Road Road in plain are good, In hilly area and in rural you can face the rough road. There can be land slide due to rainfall from July till mid Sep. and can be blocked for hours or a day, you may miss the places expected to visit, or will visit the unexpected places, to regulate the situation the team at the spot will do the best possible at the moment. Road in India are being widen So please don’t compare the driving time as estimated in developed nation.
    Preparation of relief of sun burn, Lip salve, Anti septic cream, Antihistamine cream (for relief of insect bites), Anti diarrhea (flagyl or any other), Anti headach (diamox, aspirin, paracitamol, zimalgin), Anti vomiting (avomin), For stomachach (baralgan,trigan or other diagnose) Dettol, washproof dettol plaster, Bandage and cotton, Balm, Anti cramp spray, Pills to purify the water, Scisor and knife are must in the medical kit. According to your physical condition you are requested to consult your doctor to complete your medical kit. Apart from that HIMALAYAN FRONTIERS also provides an additional medical kit including oxygen cylinder and Diamox with each group. Special precaution is taken to pack some medicine to deal with Prevention from Altitude sickness. Prevention from Altitude sickness: Best method to get better acclimatization to climb higher and sleep lower, avoid rapid ascend and walk slowly. Don’t drink alcohol, don’t take sleeping pills and avoid smoking. Drink at least 3-4 litters of liquid a day. Don’t exhaust by carrying heavy packs, Back pack should be 10-12 kg for normal trekkers. Respect the daily ascend of 300m-500 mtrs a over 3000m. If you have minor symptoms, better to not proceed higher. And should take aspirin tablets. But If the symptoms start worsening than prepare the immediate descend. One should keep in mind that the member should be not left behind unattended.
