Chandartaal Over Hamta Pass

This trek in west face of Deo Tibba is an opportunity to explore the offbeat track during first 4 days in alpine zone located high above the classical Hamta pass trek itinerary.The trek start with gradual and steady trail which goes through lush green meadows, higher pasture land that houses the rare species of wild flowers and provides the stunning Panoramic and close view of glacier and snow clad mountains.

 After 4 days of exploration of less frequented area you will join the classical Hampta pass Chandratal trek itinerary that leads through Hampta valley along Alaini Nulla.

You will encounter some challenges to cross the glacial streams which are part of the adventure that each enthusiastic adventurer is eager to experience. Each such challenges are negotiated under the supervisions of expert and experienced team leaders / guide of course with the co-operation of each participants.

Continue walking on the flat and gradual uphill path (over snow in early season) till Hampta pass (4200m) which is the gate way between Kullu and Lahoul valley. During the clear day one can enjoy the awesome view of magnificent peaks Deo-Tibba, Indraasan and Indra Kila elevating above the glacier. Steep descend from Pass to the Shea Gahru that further leads to the Chhatru where your trek ends. Here onward you will take a side trip to Chandra tal lake, A crescent shape dark blue lake is located in front of magnificent snow caped mountains range looks like an imaginary fairy land. At the end drive back to Manali with sweet memories of your adventure trip.


Day 1: Arrival Manali (2000 m) 

Day 2: Manali Jagatsukh / Bhanara (Drive) trek Tilgan Thach (2650M/ 4hrs) Trek 1 

Day 3: Tilgan – Sarotu Thatch (3300m/ 6-7 hrs) Trek 2 

Day 4: Sarotu Thach - Piyangniru (3600m/6-7 hrs) Trek 3

Day 5: Piyangniru - Chhika (3200m/ 4-6 hrs)Trek 4

Day 6: Chhika to Balu Gyra (3300m/ 5-6 hrs)

Day 7: Balu Gyra to Shea Gahru (3700 mtrs) over Hamta pass (4200m/ 6-7hrs)

Day 8: Shea Gahru to Chhatru (3360m),2-3hrs trek, Side trip to lake Chandratal

Day 9: Chhatru to Manali, 76 kms (1950m/ 5-6hrs)



Day 1: Arrival in Manali (1960m) 

Arrival in Manali, report at respected hotel. Relax for while till all participant reach. Later walk to exploring the Hadimba temple Buddhist monastery and town to by the needful accessory. Afternoon briefing about the trek. meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) at your own charge. Night in hotel.

 

Day 2: Manali Jagatsukh / Bhanara (Drive) trek Tilgan Thach (2650M) (04 hrs.). Trek 1 

Drive to Bhanara the starting point located above Jagatsukh.  Stroll in the village to take glimpse of local culture and life style of Himalayan people. Here onward uphill trail goes amidst Himalayan deciduous and evergreen forest, you will across the bountifully built temple of local deity Takshak Nag, one can pay homage to the deity but keep the shoes away before entering the complex.

Continue uphill walk across the meadows till ridge. Here the valley get opens toward north till Rohtang range stand high as sentinel make the barrier. After a short traverse you will reach at scenic meadow where you will spend your first night in the nature and below is the Manali town shimmering in night which gives impression of standing above sky. Night in camp.

 

Day 3: Tilgan – Sarotu Thatch (3300mts.Apprx.) (6 /7 hrs.) Trek 2

Second day of trek start with gradual ascend through large meadows initially providing awesome view of surrounding mountain. Trail at the place is steady and gradual, higher we climb the vegetation get shorter (bushes of Rhododendrons and juniper) but more and more the mountain around appears as mushrooms. After long day you will appreciate scenic campsite of Sarotu Thatch, Subject to the season local shepherds can be seen with their herds of Sheep and goat. Night in camp.

 

Day 4: Sarotu Thach - Piyangniru (3,600m. approx.)  (6 /7 hrs.) Trek 3

Gradual and steep ascend through open pasture land to the scenic high-altitude meadows of Raurikhauli (4,200 Mts) is the highest point of the trek. You will appreciate the close view of west face of Deo Tibba (6001m), its neighboring peaks and panorama of surrounding Himalaya. Route to the trekking peak of Pha-kandha pass by here onward. Now trail descend progressively through the bushes of rhododendron, birch trees and splendid immense glacier field of Deo Tibba to be traverse to reach camp site of Pyang-NIru located other side of the valley.

What is most fascinating to the trekkers in this camp site is its absolute alpine zone, direct view on Deo Tibba and its massive glacier field. Enjoy gazing the mesmerizing beauty of nature from the campsite till it’s not disappears in the dark of the night.

Night in camp.

 

Day 5: Piyangniru - Chhika (3200m.Apprx.)  Trek 4, around 6 hrs.

Morning light will remove the curtain and massif of white wall will appear in front of you. Capture the moments in your memory and camera and enjoy breakfast at one of the most stunning camp sites of the trek. 

After binding up descend high over the Valley floor, deep on left the stream roar down which originates from the Deo Tibba Glacier, more you descend snow clad mountainous panorama slowly start drifting away from the vision. Continue descending through wide slope till the large lush green meadow at the beneath of valley where you will join classical route of Hamta pass and leads you to the next campsite of Chhika established at the bank of Alaini river. Night in camp.

 

Day 6: Chhika to Balu Gyra (3300 mtrs) 5-6 hrs.

The trail begins by easy and slightly uphill walking across the pasture land, paved by the grass and stone slabs, you will notice abundance of wild flowers around you including Rhododendron bushes in full bloom (sub. to season). At some places the bank sloping down to the roaring river from the high cliffs. There are challenges of chilled streams to be crossed under the super vision of our expert guide / team leaders which is the part of your adventure holidays. (you are advised to carry sneakers to cross the stream which protect your feet from cold and save hurting by sharp piece of gravel / rock). Continue gradual ascend to the breath-taking alpine site of Balu Gyera at the beneath of Hamta pass. Night in camp.

 

Day 7: Balu Gyra to Shea Gahru (3700 mtrs) over Hamta pass (4200 mtrs) 6/7hrs.

As its long day to cross over pass therefore early start is advised. When its early season you will walk over compact snow (possibility of fresh snow in case of bad weather, hence required to take gaiter) and summer is carpeted by wild flowers fields. Ascends gradually by zig- Zag trail through boulder and stony path till top of mighty Hamta pass. Distant valley of Lahoul/Spiti comes in the view. From the pass one can enjoy the view of magnificent Himalayan peaks like Deo Tibba, Indra Asan and Indra Kila elevating above glacier field. Slowly landscape change from lush green valley of Kullu to the rugged terrain of Lahoul / Spiti. Now descend for about an hour (by Zig-zag track or snowy slope in early season) to Shea Gahru camp site set not far from the foot of glacier which blows chilled wind and minimise the night temperature. Night in camp.

 

Day 8: Shea Gahru to Chhatru (3360m),2-3hrs trek, Side trip to lake Chandratal

The trail descends following the chilled mountain stream (you may cross it or not depend on the temporary bridge if build over or not). Soon the Chandra river is in view, after 2-3 hours of trek reach the beautiful campsite of Chhatru at the road head between Manali- Spiti. Take your lunch and further drive to Chandra tal offers you a wonderful view of Chandra valley amidst magnificent mountain ranges (C.B. and Barashigari ranges) either side, Fascinating hanging glaciers and sheer rocks formations are awesome. Reached to the crescent shaped dark blue lake side located Infront of magnificent snow caped mountains range. In spite of rugged and inhospitable surrounding terrain it’s a summer niche to the shepherds. After enjoying the time at this imaginary fairy land, drive back to the camp site by same way. Enjoy last night of your holiday with your co-voyagers. Night in camp.

 

Day 9: Chhatru to Manali, 76 kms (1950m) 5-6h.

Morning drive back to Manali via Atul tunnel,  with. the company of awesome landscape, cascading waterfalls and sweet memories of your adventure trip, drop at the Himalayan Frontiers office to get freshen up before to make your onward journey comfortable. End of services.

Note: Trekking route is sub. to change in case of inaccessibility over Hamta pass and to Chandratal, that can be due to thickness of snow layer which will depend on the winter snow fall rates, can be due to present climatic changes such as fresh snow falls, road block and can be due to physical unfitness or sickness of participant.  

To cope with such situation a suitable decision will be taken on the spot keeping in favor of both organizer (s) and the participant (s).  In that case no compensation / refund will be made to any individual or to the whole group or to the tour operator (s).  We request you to accept such unexpected / unforeseen beyond control of anyone and co-operate with nature decision. Any matters arising from it will be governed by and construed in accordance with the jurisdiction of the law courts in Manali (India)

How To Reach Manali:

By air: Bhuntar at the distance of 50 kms from Manali, taxi can be booked on arrival and local bus station is at proximity of airport.  please note that by bus 1h30 to 2 hours of journey.

By Road: Manali is well connected to Delhi.  Overnight Volvo buses are run by Himachal road ways transport, Himachal tourism and private tour operators. Online booking facilities are available to book the tickets for the choice of your date.

Arrival time of buses at Manali is between 8-9 am onward.

Briefing of the trip: Briefing of trip will start by afternoon on day of arrival, every participant is requested to be on time. Those missing the briefing will be not repeated for those late arrival.

No Show of participant:  Those who could not reach timely on reporting day will be considered no show. No show of participant will enforce Himalayan Frontiers to either postponed the trip (if seat and trip available) or cancel their booking. Those who considered non- shown please consult the terms and condition policies applied by company. To avoid such inconvenience, we advise each participant to reach Manali a day earlier the trek start and be on time to avoid delay of trek start.


Above mentioned items should preferably be packed in a rucksack that is easier to carry. Please do handle the plastic/polythene bags and don’t carry any disposable items, ornaments and other valuables.
